Box Profile vs Corrugated vs Tile Effect Roofing Sheets: Which Should You Choose?

Box profile, corrugated, tile effect and pan tile effect roofing sheets all do the same basic job: they keep the weather out of your building. Where they differ is in how they look, how long a single sheet can be, and which finishes they come in. This guide sets out those differences plainly so you can choose the right sheet for your garage, shed, barn, stable or extension.

What they have in common

Before looking at differences, it helps to know what does not change between profiles:

• Cover width: every profile gives a 1 metre cover width after overlap, so you need the same number of sheets across a roof whichever you choose.
• Thickness: every profile is available in 0.5mm or 0.7mm.
• Cut to length: sheets are cut to any length from 0.2 metres, in millimetre increments, when you order online.
• Anti-condensation: fleece backing is an option on every sheet in every finish.

Quick comparison table

Box profile roofing sheets

Box profile sheets (our 32/1000 profile) have wide flat sections separated by raised trapezoidal ribs. They are the most common choice for garages, workshops and agricultural buildings.

Why choose box profile:

• It is the longest profile we sell online, up to 12 metres in one sheet. On a long slope that often means no end laps, which is quicker to fit and gives fewer joints for water to find.
• The deep ribs give the sheet good stiffness for its weight.
• It comes in all three finishes, including plain galvanised.
• It suits both roofing and wall cladding, so you can match the walls to the roof.

Things to consider: the look is practical rather than decorative. Next to a house, some people prefer a tile effect sheet instead.

Corrugated roofing sheets

Corrugated sheets have the familiar rounded wave that has been used on farm buildings for generations.

Why choose corrugated:

• The traditional look suits rural buildings, stables, field shelters and restoration work where you are replacing old corrugated iron or cement sheets.
• Available in plastisol, polyester or plain galvanised.
• Easy to handle on smaller buildings.

Things to consider: the maximum single length online is 5 metres. On a longer slope you will need to end lap sheets, with the lap landing on a purlin. See our guide to measuring and the fitting guide for how to plan laps.

Tile effect roofing sheets

Tile effect sheets are pressed with stepped rows so that, from a distance, the roof looks like it is covered in tiles. You get the appearance of a tiled roof with the speed of fitting a sheet.

Why choose tile effect:

• It looks more at home next to a house than an industrial profile.
• Good for single-storey extensions, garden rooms, carports and garages attached to or close to a property.
• Available in plastisol or polyester coatings in a range of colours.

Things to consider: tile effect is not available in plain galvanised, and the maximum length online is 5 metres. Because the pattern is stepped, plan where end laps fall so the rows line up.

Pan tile effect roofing sheets

Pan tile effect sheets have a curved, rolling pattern modelled on clay pan tiles. They are a strong choice where you want a softer, more traditional appearance.

Why choose pan tile effect:

• Traditional look for extensions, porches, lean-tos on period properties and outbuildings in view of the house.
• Longer than tile effect or corrugated online, up to 6 metres in one sheet.
• Available in plastisol or polyester.

Things to consider: like tile effect, there is no plain galvanised option.

Choosing a finish: plastisol, polyester or galvanised

Plastisol coated

Plastisol is a thick, textured coating applied over galvanised steel. It is the more robust of the two coatings and better able to shrug off knocks and scuffs, which makes it a popular choice for agricultural buildings, exposed sites and anywhere the roof or walls may take some wear. It comes in a choice of colours.

Polyester coated

Polyester is a thinner, smoother coating, also applied over galvanised steel. It gives a clean colour finish and is widely used on garages, sheds, extensions and general buildings where the sheets will not be subject to heavy handling or abrasion. It is usually the more economical coated option.

Plain galvanised

Galvanised sheets have a zinc coating with no paint layer, giving a bare metallic finish. They are a practical, no-frills option for barns, stores and working buildings where colour does not matter. Plain galvanised is available in box profile and corrugated only.

We do not publish lifespan figures here because performance depends on the environment, the pitch, maintenance and how the sheets are fitted. If durability on a particular site matters to you, for example near the coast or next to livestock, call the team on 01922 649795 and talk it through.

0.5mm or 0.7mm thickness?

Both thicknesses are available across every profile.

• 0.5mm is lighter and more economical, and is widely used for garages, sheds, carports and domestic outbuildings.
• 0.7mm is heavier and stiffer. It is often chosen for larger agricultural and commercial buildings, more exposed sites, or where you want a sheet that is less prone to dents from handling or foot traffic during fitting.

The right thickness also depends on your purlin spacing and site exposure. We do not give span or wind-load figures in this guide, so check the fitting guide or call us before you decide.

Do you need anti-condensation backing?

When warm, moist air inside a building meets a cold metal roof, water can condense on the underside of the sheet and drip. Our anti-condensation sheets have a fleece bonded to the underside that holds that moisture and lets it evaporate again, rather than dripping.

It is available on every profile, in every finish. It is worth considering on:

• Garages where cars, tools or stored items sit beneath the roof.
• Stables and livestock buildings, where animals produce a lot of moisture.
• Workshops and any building that is occasionally heated.
• Extensions and garden rooms with an open or partly insulated roof.

It is usually less important on open-sided field shelters and log stores with plenty of airflow. It is fitted at the factory, so you need to choose it when you order.

Which sheet for which building?

Garage

Box profile is the usual choice for a detached garage: long lengths, simple to fit and available galvanised. If the garage is attached to the house or in full view, tile effect or pan tile effect will look more domestic. Anti-condensation backing is strongly worth considering.

Shed or workshop

Box profile or corrugated in 0.5mm polyester suits most garden sheds and small workshops. Add anti-condensation backing if you store tools, bikes or timber inside.

Barn or agricultural building

Box profile for long spans and fewer end laps, or corrugated for a traditional look. Plastisol or galvanised are common for working buildings, and 0.7mm is often chosen for larger or exposed structures.

Stable or field shelter

Corrugated or box profile in plastisol is a common pairing. For enclosed stables, anti-condensation backing helps keep drips off horses and bedding.

House extension, porch or garden room

Tile effect or pan tile effect, in plastisol or polyester, to sit comfortably alongside the main roof. Anti-condensation backing is advisable if the space will be used or heated.

Frequently asked questions

Do all profiles need the same number of sheets?

Yes. Every profile gives a 1 metre cover width, so a roof 6 metres wide needs 6 sheets whether you choose box profile, corrugated, tile effect or pan tile effect.

Which profile gives the longest single sheet?

Box profile, up to 12 metres online. Pan tile effect goes to 6 metres, and corrugated and tile effect to 5 metres.

Can I get tile effect sheets in galvanised?

No. Tile effect and pan tile effect come in plastisol or polyester only. Plain galvanised is available in box profile and corrugated.

Can I add anti-condensation to any sheet?

Yes. Fleece backing is an option on every profile in every finish.

What is the minimum pitch for each profile?

That depends on the profile, the sheet length and whether there are end laps. Check the fitting guide or call the team rather than relying on a general figure.

Do I need matching flashings and fixings?

Yes. Use flashings in a matching finish, fixings suited to your purlins, and profile-matched foam fillers from our accessories.
